Sonic and Mario at Olympic Games
Imagine its 1990, and you play Sonic the Hedgehog games regularly. A dedicated fan of Sonic games, you simply loath Mario. And then, if someone tells you, after a decade from now, Mario and Sonic would be featuring in a single Sonic Game. You would probably think that this guy has had a drug overdose or something. But drugged or not, this has been done today in the Sonic game we review today.
Well, in one word, this Sonic game isn't worth your time. Its a half hearted attempt at bringing together the most famous rivals of their time. The game starts with choosing a character, which has a physical trait assigned to it. However, as per the game, every character feels the same in every department, as if these traits do not matter at all.
The Sonic game offers you various Olympic events to choose from, real and fantasy world. The more you play, the more unlockable items, missions and traits you will earn. This definitely adds to the variety of the game. Apart from the athletic events like javelin throw, races, relays, high jumping etc, this Sonic Hedgehog game offers you quite some variety. Table tennis, fencing, rowing are some of the events which are interesting, but the fun has been taken out of them due to the erroneous controls. You cannot move your player in table tennis, but can swing your bat. Fantasy events like Mario Kart style shooting, 10,000 meter diving are a fun at any time.
Another interesting thing about this Sonic hedgehog game are the graphics. They have been nicely done, with accurate designs and awesome animation to the minutest detail. A plus point is that this Sonic game is brilliant on high definition, with the engine supporting high quality displays.
The place where the game really suffers are the controls and motion handling. The controls are tough, the instructions incompetent and the game reception poor. If you get my point, then this Sonic game might have you screaming at your console or your game for failed moves. Even when you execute a move properly, the game engine sometimes doesn't seem to understand it. A technical glitch for the developers but for those who play Sonic games, a sheer drawback.
Although, this isn't an Online Sonic game, it still lets you upload the scores and achievements from the Sonic games online, and compare it with other players of the game. For the ending words, this game could have been much more, especially considering the fact that this is the first union of two famous rivals, Mario and Sonic. The fun has been taken away by the awkward controls and motion detection of the Sonic game, which can definitely be improved upon. And incrementing it to an online Sonic game might work, with players battling around the globe for achievements and stats. All in all, nothing for the regular Sonic games player.
