Sonic Chronicles - The Dark Brotherhood Preview
The infamous combination of Bioware and Sega on Sonic the Hedgehog games has riddled many. The offering from this camp is the Sonic Chronicles : The Dark Brotherhood, a Role Playing Game based on the DS console. But to the shock and awe of Sonic game players around the world, whats in the works looks to be something to wait for.
As per the veterans who play Sonic games, this upcoming one can be one of the very few , after the original Sonic games, which can shake up the genre. Sega and Bioware are both mum about the storyline, but what we got from the demo was that the basic revolves around the regular Sonic games plot. The game starts with a panic message from Tails to Sonic, who is vacationing at the time and after a series of events, our hero is off to what he does best, racing along danger. Combining the basic elements of RPG with a Sonic Hedgehog game, we have Sonic choosing a couple of assists who would be helping him in achieving the missions of the game.
The Sonic game revolves around two key aspects, which are exploration and Combat. Maneuvering Sonic would be done through the touch screen, by deciding the places of movement with our fingers. Action buttons, for performing various Sonic game moves, were present which when touched, used to trigger the move without any hassle. Apart from navigation, exploration also involved talking to NPCs or entities in the game. Those who play Sonic games would really like this feature and it would be really essential in solving certain puzzles in the map.
The second major aspect, combat is something which is a trademark of Sonic games and RPG. Turn based fight, with options planned around the screen is the basic combat setup. Sonic the Hedgehog game players would find themselves right at home with the normal moves but with the power moves, some experience would be required. Power moves would also require some fatigue points, which are like physical fatigue caused due to a heavy move. Moreover, some moves can only be performed when a certain combination of player types exists, which adds variety to the game. Of course, a won battle gives you goodies which can be used to buff up your traits or add gear to the characters, which proves important in executing or defending some moves. The traits consist of speed, attack, defense and luck, as per most RPG games.
The combination of RPG and Sonic game elements have been done very well, and this is something which can drive the game quite well. The graphics are decent, actually very good for a DS due to the engine power. Special effects, ultra combinations, super cool moves, this Sonic Hedgehog game has everything for an enthusiast. Scheduled for a winter release, this game has high hopes riding on it, of the Sega and Bioware camp to the old players of Sonic games.
