Sonic the Hedgehog games have spawned many television series and alternate media like comics. Due to the popularity of sonic games, these animations have been highly successful. Watching sonic animations on television helped the sonic games in the same way that playing sonic games had a huge impact on the success of these television series.

The first outing of Sonic games into the television arena was with Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, in 1993. The story revolved around Sonic and his mate Tails from the Sonic the Hedgehog game and their attempts to tackle the plans of Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his robots. The story had a comic take in which the evil doctor tried to capture the planet Mobius, but due to the stupidity and incompetence of his army, he was unable to do so. This series also featured Sonic himself in a special "Sonic Sez" footage, where Sonic advised people not to use guns, consume alcohol, study in school etc. Due to the immense popularity in the community which used to play Sonic games, the message was easily communicated.

The second, and darker outing was Sonic the Hedgehog, in which there was more killing than before, and the series concentrated on the darker aspects of sonic games. Sonic the Hedgehog games, by this time, had a complete plot which could be twisted around to get a good series. This series saw Sonic and his group of Freedom Fighters from Sonic the Hedgehog game fighting Robotnik for the freedom of their planet Mobian. The game also introduced Sonic's first love interest, Princess Sally Acorn from the royal family of Mobian.

The third series consisted of the introduction of siblings of Sonic from Sonic the Hedgehog game. Named as Sonic Underground, it brought Sonia the Hedgehog, Manic the Hedgehog and Queen Aleena, their mother. Together, they brought down the empire of Robotnik with Sonic and his teammates, and the family started ruling Mobian as the council of 4. The Sonic game influenced the series to introduce a medallion which was used by Sonic. It could morph into an electric guitar, due to the magical powers possessed by the medallion.

Apart from the above series, there have been some more anime which were released in accordance with Sonic the Hedgehog games. Those who played Sonic games had a deep interest in these animes, and they became instant hits. The first was Sonic the Hedgehog anime OVA which was released in Japan. It featured adventures from the Sonic games, carried out by Sonic, Tails, Robotnik, Knuckles and Metal Sonic. Another was Sonic X, which saw Sonic being teleported to Earth by Chaos Control, caused by the Chaos Emeralds.

With the new generation of Online Sonic games which are available on the Internet, the stage is set again for a brand new television series. The increasing number players of Sonic games on PS3 and Xbox 360, who have the facility to experience the new Sonic, would absolutely love the new series.
